Diffuse Alopecia (Telogen Effluvium)

Diffuse Alopecia (Telogen Effluvium)
Diffuse alopecia, or telogen effluvium, is a disruption of the hair growth cycle causing sudden and uniform hair shedding across the entire scalp. Fortunately, this process is reversible. It occurs when many hairs in the growth phase (anagen) simultaneously enter the shedding phase (telogen).
Common causes:
  • Stress: Cortisol released during stress can reduce blood circulation and hinder the absorption of vital nutrients by hair follicles, negatively impacting hair growth.
  • Iron deficiency: Often seen with poor nutrition or in women with heavy menstrual bleeding. Diagnosed by blood tests and corrected with supplements.
  • Major surgery or chronic illness: Large surgeries can trigger hair loss 1–3 months post-operation. Usually temporary except in severe chronic cases.
  • Hormonal imbalances: Natural processes such as pregnancy, menopause, or contraceptive use can affect the hair growth cycle.
  • Thyroid disorders: Both hypo- and hyperthyroidism may cause hair loss.
  • Medication intake: Some drugs—lipid-lowering agents, anticoagulants, gout medications, anti-inflammatory drugs, vitamin A, antiepileptics, antidepressants, antithyroid medications, beta-blockers—can lead to hair shedding.
