Dry Dandruff Dry dandruff is a common scalp disorder characterized by the accumulation of dead skin cells that form small white flakes, visible on the scalp and shoulders. It is often accompanied by itching or a tight sensation, but without inflammation. The scalp appears dry, dull, and rough. This condition results from accelerated epidermal cell renewal. Cells from the basal layer reach the surface (stratum corneum) twice as fast as they do on a normal scalp. This abnormal proliferation leads to the accumulation of poorly bound dead cells, forming visible dandruff. The exact cause is unknown, but several factors contribute to this imbalance: – Climate conditions: dandruff tends to worsen in winter. – Hormonal imbalance: it is more common during puberty and may intensify up to the age of 30. – Microbiota: people with dandruff show an increased presence of the yeast Malassezia furfur, which can make up to 75% of the scalp's microbiota. – Physical or emotional stress. – Diet and alcohol consumption.
