Alopecia Areata Alopecia areata is an autoimmune disease in which the immune system mistakenly attacks hair follicles. This causes hair loss in specific areas of the scalp or other parts of the body, such as eyebrows, eyelashes, or beard. It appears as round or oval smooth patches without hair. In severe cases, the condition can progress to complete scalp hair loss (alopecia totalis) or loss of all body hair (alopecia universalis). Hair loss episodes are often followed by partial or full regrowth, but relapses are quite common. Alopecia areata can be hereditary and occurs in both children and adults, most often before the age of 20. Severe stress can be a trigger, although this is difficult to prove. The disease may suddenly stop or last for months or even years.
